Chelsea Apartment
new York NY

PROJECT

Needing a pied-à-terre in one the world’s fashion centers, a young clothing designer bought a fixer upper near Union Square.  Our charge was to transform the bland, dilapidated space into a sophisticated apartment by reconfiguring the entry sequence and plan, as well as designing with an opulent material palette.

With a simple shift in layout, the boxy, separated kitchen, dining and living spaces are transformed into a formal apartment for hosting and entertaining.  In the rearranged space, one enters through a formal entry hall and vestibule, breaking through a threshold and into a space with the kitchen, dining and living room. Through a double door, one enters the main bedroom suite, with a large window filling the space with light and equipped with a large walk in closet and private bathroom.

The kitchen is black lacquer with polished nickel hardware, with nero marquina countertops and black mirror. Along the back wall, two floating shelves with integrated lighting, displaying plates and glasses. The backsplash and walls are fitted with black mirror, giving the kitchen a sparkle while maintaining its dark, moody tone. This shine is further amplified by the strong light coming through the large window at the end of the space, raking over the dining and living rooms with furniture and decoration by interior designer Ryan Korban.
